I got several PM, and a few eMail, asking about the .54 round ball. Well, for all those who asked, and anyone else who may be interested, I ran a program on the .54 Round ball using the following parameters.Sometimes, in the field, the ramrod isn't stuck that bad and you can make a little jig out of metal plate with a 3/8" hole (if that is the diameter of your ramrod). This little plate can be about 3/4" wide, 3" long, 1/8" thick and the hole at one end. You slip this over the ramrod and lift up the long end.Andover, VT. Apr 28, 2021. #4. IMO, it does help with allowing the balls to exit the mould easier. If you have a mold where bullets stick, take 0000 steel wool and gently polish the edges of the cavities. For the Skychief load the order is; powder, thick over powder wad (sometimes referred to as a nitro card), then the shot load, thin overshot card, then a thick fiber "cushion" wad that has been thoroughly ...Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish. This has done wonders for a couple of old shotguns I have messed with.The Hawken and Renegade are advertised as being .500 bore with .006" grooves. This gives you a total space of .512" that you need to work off of. Subtract the .490 ball and this means you need to make up .022" of space. Yeah, the lock isn't the best, and the plastic stocks on the new ones look and feel pretty crummy, and the sights are just plain old ugly. BUT... they're shooters.Stack all that over FFFG black powder. Start your charges around 45-50 grains of powder. Increase the charge 5 grains at a time until you find what the rifle likes. Consider getting a range rod for loading, use the short starter you have shown in the photo.Ok I got a good old cva st.louis hawken in 54. I used to hunt elk with it. But here is the real difference between the Hawken and the Seneca, the Seneca is a completely scaled down version of the Hawken. I've put a number of them together for customers. Chambers locks are the standard that all the rest of the locks in the hobby are measured.
