Everyone plays the game differently, so I'd say just ask yourself what makes the game fun for you and your friends, then tweak the sliders in map generation to match. They give us a LOT of freedom to play the game exactly how you want to.

My advice is to set the generator settings to this: very big and frequent water, normal-big starting area. If it doesn't give you a peninsula, you still will have something with decent choke points. Tried that for like 30min, kept getting terrible starts so dug through this sub bit and im content with this.
